Our Aboriginal Catholic Community Schools are well resources and have a proud history in the provision of education to local people. There are a number of Aboriginal teachers in each of the schools as well as a strong presence of Aboriginal people in administrative and classroom support.
There is still, however, an on-going need for experienced teachers who are prepared to continue the work begun by dedicated religious in earlier years and carried on by generous lay people in more recent times. I write to ask you to consider if you may be one of those prepared to help with this work of the church. Offers of employment are usually made for two years.
Townsville Catholic Education Office will consider the release of staff who may be interested in secondment and are subsequently selected to work in our Aboriginal Catholic Community Schools.
The Secondment process means that the teachers would be on a loan from their school for the two year period. Your school or system would need to provide a guarantee of employment at your present school or within the system when you return after two years. A letter approving the secondment needs to be supplied to the Director of Catholic Education, Diocese of Darwin.
Release on this basis would guarantee a position in your present school at the conclusion of your two-year appointment. Long Service Leave (LSL) and other entitlements would also be preserved at your current employment and your LSL will be enhanced from your service in our Aboriginal Catholic Community Schools.
Some staff may prefer to negotiate a two-year contract in our schools and to resign from their present position. A contract does not guarantee ongoing employment within our system or with other Catholic schools.
